I enjoy DOOM Eternal and the story aspect of the game because it allows the developers to justify why the Slayer is going to the Arctic or going to Urdak. I really like how DOOM Eternal expands the story of DOOM 4 and does considerable world-building as well.ĭoom 4 (referring to DOOM 2016) really only had two places: Mars and Hell.

What I’m trying to say is this: If DOOM gets a bigger story focus in DOOM III (You know it’s happening), don’t just call it bad because it’s a story in a DOOM game. What I want from DOOM is more story and more levels that let the story break out of it’s shell and tell people “Eh why not, let’s make a story”Įternal blended it’s non-stop action, platforming and story together and we knew it was going to be a story game because there were story trailers, unlike 2016. It has you hastily make through the level while stopping you a couple times for the story, leaving a trail of Codexes that give context to the events.

(I believe that’s the mission) It’s a beautiful level in the fact that it lets you actually realize “Oh nice, there’s a story in this game!” and shows you the backstory. Now does this mean DOOM should have no action? No. It needs to revert away from killing demons all the damn time, and give focus to the lore and story sometimes. What they don’t seem to recognize is that you need to be pushed to kill demons. What people don’t recognize is the fact that the games do not need to be just killing demons for no reason. As a writer myself, the idea of a character who gives fucks none about what he does makes me happy to think about. Hear me out: DOOM has potential for great storytelling. So that brings me to the question, what the hell is so wrong about DOOM having a story that’s in your face? Okay, nothing.

But other than that, I have no major gripes. Some cutscenes could have been transferred into gameplay and had no need to be cutscenes. They convoluted it a tiny bit by syncing it up with DOOM Slayer being DOOMGuy. (which you should be fine with, be welcome to change.) Now I will acknowledge the story has some flaws with it, Samuel became a exposition whore and wouldn’t SHUT UP. So I went around online looking for posts about Eternal and one thing that kept coming up was the complaints about the STORY and that DOOM wasn’t just ripping and tearing anymore and was trying something new. This is more DOOM: Eternal I’m talking about because 2016’s story was kinda just non-existent.
